Welcome to Fugitives' Drift Lodge

Fugitives Drift Lodge has been attracting and thrilling visitors from all over the world since 1989, and the name “Rattray” has become synonymous with quality Heritage Tourism in South Africa.

Before his death in January 2007, David Rattray achieved an international reputation for his battlefield tours and overseas lectures. The team he put in place now continues this great tradition, entertaining our guests with moving, passionate and detailed presentations on the battlefields of the Anglo Zulu War.

Although this remarkable history is what draws people to this beautiful and remote location, there is much more to Fugitives’ Drift....

The Lodge

The Lodge, where the Rattray family is based, is set on a hillside above the Buffalo River Gorge. Enjoy superb meals in the splendid atmosphere of a veritable museum of Zulu War memorabilia. Spacious, comfortable, en-suite cottages each have a private verandah affording views over the plains flanking the Buffalo River Gorge.

The Guest House

The Guest House is filled with Zulu artefacts and an interesting eclectic décor, with the original, old farmhouse as the dining and entertaining area. Terra-Cotta cottages have large, en-suite bedrooms that are tastefully decorated in a simple, ethnic style and all have private verandahs with sweeping views of the reserve and surrounding battlefields.

Travel Advice

Following David’s death and the international publicity generated as a result, we fully understand that some guests may be concerned about safety – however, we believe the Lodge is now safer than ever.
